Paul Thomas Anderson
(Boogie Nights, Magnolia, There Will Be Blood) will be releasing his latest film, The Master, on Oct. 12. Anticipation has been high, but a pair of cryptic, intriguing teaser trailers have left an air of mystery around the film’s plot and subject matter. We know that The Master takes place just after the close of World War II, and that it stars Joaquin Phoenix as some sort of mentally-disturbed veteran and Phillip Seymour Hoffman as a writer/guru who seems to have been modeled after Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard.
Now, a full theatrical tralier has been released, giving fans a more focused look into what to expect from Anderson’s latest.
It appears the film will indeed revolve around the relationship between Phoenix and Hoffman’s characters, the latter of which takes the former on as a kind of test subject and inspirational muse. The result of their relationship seems to be a set of theories modelled after Hubbard’s Dianetics, which gave way to Scientology.
