Although the Mayans didn’t predict the end of the world, they got the date right for something equally unexpected. My Bloody Valentine, who has teased a new set of material over the course of 2012, announced that it’s finished mastering a yet-to-be-titled album—on Dec. 21 of this year no less, the end of the Mayan calendar. In recent interviews, frontman Kevin Shields suggested the band’s album would be finished by the end of the year and that a new EP of material would follow. This would be its first album in 21 years since the absolutely essential Loveless.
“I think with this record, people who like us will immediately connect with something,” Shields told NME. “Based on the very, very few people who’ve heard stuff – some engineers, the band, and that’s about it – some people think it’s stranger than ‘Loveless’. I don’t. I feel like it really frees us up, and in the bigger picture it’s 100 per cent necessary.”
The band has inched closer and closer to the spotlight in recent months, with nine dates in the U.K. and Japan planned in 2013. With Shields’ promise with an album before the end of the year and the power of the internet, we’re keeping our eyes peeled on the web for a while.
