After a battle with colon cancer last year, Bobby Womack now told NME that he’s suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. He told the website that he’s in the early stages of the disease, and he struggles to remember names of his own songs and collaborators.
“The doctor says there are signs of Alzheimer’s. It’s not bad yet but will get worse,” Womack told NME, adding later: “How can I not remember songs I wrote? It’s frustrating. I don’t feel together yet. Negative things come in my mind and it’s hard for me to remember sometimes.”
Womack released the Damon Albarn-produced The Bravest Man in the Universe on XL Recordings last year to much critical acclaim. As NME pointed out, Womack called Albarn by the wrong last name at an awards ceremony last year. “The most embarrassing thing is I’ll be ready to announce Damon and can’t remember his last name,” Womack said in the article, which also notes that he is currently working on a new album, The Best Is Yet To Come.
