It’s official—The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has its Green Goblin—Well, maybe.
According to an article in The Hollywood Reporter, Chris Cooper has jumped on the project to play Norman Osborn.
Previously portrayed by Willem Dafoe in the original trilogy, Osborn is a brilliant scientist whose experiments with superhuman strength causes him to go insane and adopt the persona of the murderous Green Goblin. Osborn was referenced several times throughout the first Amazing Spider-Man film, but his only appearance was an after-credits stinger where he stayed in the shadows.
As of now, it has not been reported if Cooper will don the Goblin mask in this film or in a planned sequel. And while The Hollywood Reporter article says he’s been cast as The Green Goblin, an article in /Film theorizes that he’s only been confirmed as Osborn.
Cooper is but the latest acclaimed actor to sign on to the franchise following Jamie Foxx (who will portray Electro) and Paul Giamatti (who is rumored to play The Rhino). Chronicle’s Dane DeHaan has also been confirmed to play Osborn’s son Harry (a role taken on by James Franco in the original films).
The film is currently slated for a May 2, 2014 release date.
