Promised Land director Gus Van Sant really wants to direct the movie adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey.
Fifty Shades of Grey
has been on the film news radar since last year when it was announced that Universal Pictures and Focus Features bought the movie rights to the book. The main question for fans of the series, however, was who would play the lead roles of Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey. The rumor mill has been turning, but no confirmations have been made.
Either way, Van Sant would like to be considered to direct the franchise. According to The Wrap, in an effort to show his dedication and/or prove his skills, Van Sant shot and sent test footage of a scene in the book in which Anastasia loses her virginity to Christian. While there’s no word on who played Anastasia in the scene, Magic Mike’s Alex Pettyfer starred as Christian. The report stresses Pettyfer was only cast for the test footage and is not attached to the actual role.
According to the report, Universal has made no formal offer, nor did they ask Van Sant to shoot the test, but no one ever got to direct a movie adaptation of an erotic bestseller without taking a little initiative.
Even with no director or actors attached, it has been announced Kelly Marcel would write the adaption for the big screen and the producers behind The Social Network would produce the feature. If Van Sant did sign on to direct, the film franchise could certainly do much worse for a production team.
