Universal’s sci-fi epic Oblivion earned $38.2 million domestically for its opening weekend, and with international sales hitting $112 million, the film grossed a total of $150.2 million worldwide.
Co-written and directed by Tron: Legacy’s Joseph Kosinski, Oblivion stars Tom Cruise as one of Earth’s last human inhabitants after an alien invasion. This film also achieved Cruise’s highest opening weekend sales outside of War of the Worlds and the Mission: Impossible films.
Oblivion also stars Morgan Freeman and Olga Kurylenko. M83’s Anthony Gonzalez scored the film.
The Jackie Robinson biopic 42 dropped to No. 2 this week with $18 million, and animated comedy The Croods came in at third place with $9.5 domestically.
