Over a decade after Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon wowed international audiences with it’s phenomenal martial arts sequences and touching story, The Weinstein Company has announced plans for a sequel, Deadline reported.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon II – The Green Destiny is set to begin production in March 2014 and will see Michelle Yeoh reprise her role as Yu Shu Lien. Notably absent from the credits will be virtually the rest of the of the cast from the 2000 original, including Lee, who’s direction helped the film garner four Academy Awards including Best Foreign Language Film.
The films, spoken entirely in Mandarin, are based off a series of Chinese novels by Wang Dulu called The Crane Iron Pentology. The original, which is the highest-grossing foreign language film in American history, followed the fourth book, and the sequel will take on the fifth and last novel in the series.
Yuen Wo Ping will take the reins from Lee as director, and the film will also star martial arts icon Donnie Yen as Silent Wolf.
