In a “Look at me! Look at me!” social media age where we can pick and choose the details we present online, what do we reveal in the most private space on the web: our inboxes? Actress Miranda July, known for her role in indie hit Me and You and Everyone We Know, gets to the heart of the question in a new email project that anyone can be a part of, called “We Think Alone.”
Collecting private emails from celebrities and public figures who are used to being in the spotlight—like Kirsten Dunst, NBA star player Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Lena Dunham and Rodarte’s Mulleavy sisters— the project provides a unique look into the dailies of the brave collaborators, all listed here. And really, if you told me that you weren’t overly eager to scan some of Lena Dunham’s emails, we’d probably think you were lying.
Dreamed up for a Swedish exhibit titled, “On the Tip of My Tongue,” the project will send out 10 themed emails each Monday from July 1-Nov. 11 of this year to anyone who signs up on the website.
According to July, “WE THINK ALONE has given me the excuse to read my friends’ emails and the emails of some people I wish I was friends with and for better or worse it’s changed the way I see all of them. I think I really know them now.”
