After four hilarious seasons, The IT Crowd ended in 2010 with no wrap-up for the employees for the IT department of Reynholm Industries. Due to the busy schedules of the show’s four stars—Chris O’Dowd, Richard Ayoade, Katherine Parkinson and Matt Berry—the sitcom had long been rumored to be working on a fifth season, but nothing ever panned out. Now the show’s creator Graham Linehan has confirmed that the show will receive a 40-minute special finale later this year.
Since the fourth season, O’Dowd has become well known to American audiences, appearing in Bridesmaids, HBO’s Girls and starring in his own HBO comedy, Family Tree, which premieres this weekend. Ayoade, who played Moss on The IT Crowd, was one of the stars of last summer’s The Watch and has directed his first film, Submarine, and an episode of Community.
The series finale is expected to shoot in the next few weeks and Channel 4 has said that it will air later this year.
