Early last week, reports came in that Will Ferrell and Adam McKay’s Funny or Die would be producing a six-episode mini-series for IFC titled The Spoils of Babylon. The series will reportedly spoof the kind of sprawling, overly dramatic television demonstrated by the likes of The Thorn Birds and Winds of War.
Babylon, in turn, will focus on the melodramatic trials and tribulations of the Morehouse family, a wealthy clan that made their fortune in oil. Ferrell will star as Eric Jonrosh, the “author” of the best-selling novel that Babylon is based on.
He will also appear as the Shah of Iran in a plotline involving the family’s flirtation with international espionage.
Now, Deadline reports that Tobey Maguire and Kristen Wiig have joined the cast as members of the Morehouse family. Wiig will play Morehouse daughter Cynthia, while Maguire will portray adopted son Devon. According to the article, the two will grow to run the Morehouse business together, all the while fighting their decidedly non-familial love for one another.
The series will be directed and co-written by Matt Piedmont, who directed the Will Ferrell Spanish western spoof, Casa di mi Padre. Saturday Night Live writer Andrew Steele also contributed to the script.
