In such a tumultuous period of climate change and pollution, is there a better time to take pollution down to zero? According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony Pictures is currently in negotiations to pick up the rights to beloved cartoon series Captain Planet and the Planeteers for a film adaptation.
The show followed the story of five teens from all across the globe that are given superpowers by Gaia, the earth spirit, to protect the world from pollution and various nasty baddies. With their powers combined the group summons the superhero Captain Planet and subsequently kicks pollution’s ass.
While a movie adaptation was in the works in the ‘90s, the film never moved past scripting. In the late 2011 Cartoon Network also attempted to adapt the classic cartoon into a live-action series, but the show never took off. However with producer Mark Gordon (Saving Private Ryan, The Patriot) joining Don Murphy (Transformers, Natural Born Killers and Susan Montford—producers for the Cartoon Network adaptation—things are looking promising for this new adaptation of one of the longest running cartoons of the ‘90s.
Let’s just hope Don Cheadle is ready to don the old attire.
