Helena Bonham Carter
has been tapped to play Cinderella’s fairy godmother in the Kenneth Branagh-directed adaptation, The Hollywood Reporter has announced.
This live-action take on the classic Disney movie has already signed Downton Abbey’s Lily James to the title role, Cate Blanchett as the evil stepmother and Richard Madden (Game of Thrones) as the prince. Holliday Grainger (The Borgias) and Sophie McShera (Downton Abbey) are also set to appear as the wicked stepsisters.
This time around, the fairy godmother will get more screen time than in its animated predecessor. The character, disguised as a beggar, watches over Cinderella for a time before unveiling her true self.
The Harry Potter actress recently starred in Les Misérables and will appear in Disney’s The Lone Ranger alongside Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer. Cinderella producers are planning to start shooting the movie in London this fall.
