It looks like Javier Bardem has a busy year in front of him. He’s part of an all-star cast that can be seen this fall in the upcoming Cormac McCarthy-scripted film, The Counselor, and now the Spanish actor has signed on to play lead roles in two new action films.
According to Deadline, the Oscar-winning actor will play key roles in both J.C. Chandor’s upcoming A Most Violent Year and Pierre Morel’s The Gunman. The latter will see Bardem alongside Academy Award-winning actor Sean Penn in an international thriller. Though there is no information yet on Bardem’s character, it seems likely that he’ll play the opposition to Penn’s international operative.
A Most Violent Year, on the other hand, casts Bardem in a rare role as the protagonist. The film is to be written and directed by Chandor, who previously directed Margin Call, and it is expected to begin filming later this year in Manhattan.
Bardem is known for his convincing performances as the villain in films like last year’s Skyfall and 2007’s No Country for Old Men, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
