Buzz was abound when Lou Reed had to cancel a string of West Coast tour dates back in April, especially since the Velvet Underground songwriter missed out on his two dates at Coachella. But over the weekend it was announced that the “unavoidable complications” that made Reed miss his shows was actually a life-saving liver transplant from which he’s currently recovering.
Laurie Anderson, Reed’s wife, told The Times of London that “it’s as serious as it gets. He was dying.” After reports of Lou Reed’s surgery began leaking out, Lou posted a message to his fans on Facebook proclaiming that, “I am a triumph of modern medicine, physics and chemistry. I am bigger and stronger than stronger than ever.”
Laurie Anderson mentions that while the 71-year-old Reed isn’t back to his full strength yet, he’s already doing t’ai chi and making great steps towards recovery. Reed seems to be in high spirits already, ending his Facebook post with a message of positivity, “I look forward to being on stage performing, and writing more songs to connect with your hearts and spirits and the universe well into the future.”
