For around the cost of a plane ticket to New York City, you can own a set of playing cards inspired by The Big Apple. Metrodeck playing cards are made from discarded and repurposed subway fare cards. The found cards are screen printed with their suits. The face cards represent landmarks from the city’s five boroughs including a Statue of Liberty Queen of Heats, Central Park Queen of Spades, Empire State Building King of Diamonds, Chrysler Building King of Clubs and a Coney Island joker.
The cards are undeniably well-designed. But, with a hefty price tag per deck and a caution to not actually use the cards for their intended purpose, one has to wonder how a $5 metro card becomes a $550 set of decorative playing cards.
