The Giver’s young protagonist has at long last been cast. Australian actor Brenton Thwaites (Maleficent) is set to star opposite Jeff Bridges in The Weinstein Company and Walden Media’s adaptation of The Giver, according to Deadline.
Thwaites previously starred in the Australian TV series Home and Away and will play the young prince opposite Elle Fanning and Angelina Jolie in Disney’s upcoming Maleficent. He beat out many up-and-coming actors for the role, including Nick Robinson (The Kings of Summer), Tye Sheridan (Mud), Kodi Smit-McPhee (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), Dylan Minnette (Let Me In) and Dylan Sprayberry (Man of Steel).
The Giver, based on the celebrated young adult novel by Lois Lowry, is set in a dystopian society where human history has been erased, emotion does not exist and freedom has been rejected. Thwaites will play Jonas, the Receiver of Memory, who is taught to confront the lies that have infected society by the Giver (Bridges).
Phillip Noyce (Salt) is set to direct the adaptation, and Vadim Perelman (House of Sand and Fog) wrote the script. Production will begin in South Africa, possibly as early as this fall.
