<i>The Killing</i>'s Lars Mikkelsen Revealed as New <i>Sherlock</i> Villain

Sherlock fans have been treated to good news as of late, with production for the long-awaited third season finally moving along and the show’s recent panel at San Diego Comic-Con this month. Today, we learned some significant casting news: Sherlock’s season three enemy will be Charles Augustus Magnussen, played by Danish actor Lars Mikkelsen (The Killing).

The show’s producer, Sue Vertue, revealed the news today through Twitter, where she also unveiled a photo of the character. In Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original stories, Magnussen was a blackmailer who coerces money from the wealthy; however, there’s no telling how series creator Steven Moffat will interpret the character.

Mikkelsen will be taking the place of Jim Moriarty (Andrew Scott), Sherlock’s well-matched foe throughout seasons one and two. Filming for season three began in March, and the new episodes are expected to air sometime in early 2014 in the U.S. and late 2013 in the U.K.
