They’re maybe not the first duo of ‘60s-rooted music icons you’d expect to hit the road together, but Beach Boys mastermind Brian Wilson and legendary guitarist Jeff Beck are teaming up for a joint North American tour this fall.
Beck honored Wilson and The Beach Boys in 2006 with his own takes on “Surf’s Up” and “Surfin’ USA,” but recently he was enlisted to help Wilson out on his latest solo album. The guitarist appears on a handful of tracks on the album, which he feels is reminiscent of Wilson’s Pet Sounds days.
In an interview with USA Today, the guitarist said he’s been inspired by Eastern and Irish music lately, so it will be interesting to see how his tastes meld with Wilson’s surf-inspired tunes. The two will play as a duo and individually—Wilson will be supported by former Mike Love employees Al Jardine and David Marks; as they hop destinations on their 18-city tour across America and parts of Canada.
“He’s got a truckload of hits to play, but we’ll build on that and interact,” Beck told the newspaper. “Brian will kick things off, but I’ll also be given enough time to establish what I’m about. In the end, we’ll mix and match. It’s a complete honor to be on stage with him.”
