Joanna Newsom Joins Paul Thomas Anderson's Inherent Vice

We already know she can act. With a hilarious cameo in IFC’s Portlandia and a guest spot in MGMT’s music video for “Kids,” it’s clear that Joanna Newsom is multi-talented. Now, one of the best directors of our time thinks she ought to try on a feature film for size.

The Playlist reports that Newsom was seen on set of Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice, a neatly kept secret since it started filming a couple month ago. For a first role in a major motion picture, Newsom couldn’t be surrounded by better talent. Here’s who has been confirmed in PTA’s latest: Joaquin Phoenix, Benicio Del Toro, Owen Wilson, Reese Witherspoon, Josh Brolin, Martin Short, Jena Malone, Kevin J. O’Connor, Katherine Waterston, Timothy Simons, Peter McRobbie, Sasha Pieterse. Oh, and possibly Sean Penn.

The story is adapted from Thomas Pynchon’s novel of the same name and focuses on a pot-smoking private investigator from California in the ’60s. Phoenix will play the lead character, Doc, and Waterston will play Shasta, the ex-girlfriend of Doc’s. There’s no word yet on who Newsom will play.
