M.I.A., Versace Collaboration to Debut in Early October

Last November at a lecture at MOMA PS1 in Queens, the audience got a surprising sneak peak at eclectic singer/rapper M.I.A.’s desktop. Folders marked “Versace Prints,” “Bootleg Versace,” and “Versace Outlines” fueled rumors of collaboration between the St. Martin’s educated artist and the iconic Italian fashion house, according to MTV Style. M.I.A. confirmed rumors that she would be working on a project with Versace not long after the sneak-peak at the bones of her personal research, but it wasn’t until this past Thursday at the Balenciaga show at Paris Fashion Week that it was confirmed. M.I.A. casually told the press that her collaboration will debut Oct. 3., according to Women’s Wear Daily.

Fashionista speculates that she will be doing a capsule collection for the Versace Versus line, the lower-priced line in which Versace commissions collections from various designers. The line is headed up by Irish designer J.W. Anderson, and invites artists and designers to interpret the brand with their own creative lens.

Before the M.I.A. rumors, there was speculation that the Italian fashion house would be working with singer Lana Del Rey, more evidence that Versace and pop music are having a moment—or several moments. At the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, Grimes and 2 Chainz accidentally wore coordinated Versace pants on the red carpet. At the close of the Versace show in Milan on Sept. 20, Migos’ and Drake’s “Versace” remix boomed for the catwalk just four days before his album “Nothing Was the Same” dropped.
