Taylor Swift will be joining Meryl Streep, Katie Holmes and Jeff Bridges in the movie adaptation of Lois Lowry’s The Giver, which THR reports will be produced by the Weinstein Company and Walden Media. The dystopic young adult novel gave practically every Millennial their first exposure to more complex literary devices, symbolism and critical reading skills somewhere in their grade school years, and it won Lowry the Newbery Medal for distinguished children’s literature in 1994.
Brenton Thwaites will star as Jonas, a boy who discovers the concept of knowledge in an otherwise machine-like distant future. Bridges will play The Giver, the titular sage who devises a plot to help Jonas free himself from the community, and Streep will play the village’s iron-fisted Chief Elder. The extent of Swift’s role in the film hasn’t yet been revealed, though it is likely that she will only play a peripheral character now that The Odd Life of Timothy Green’s Odeya Rush has been already cast as Fiona, Jonas’ love interest.
The film is tentatively set for an Aug. 15, 2014 release.
