We reported last Friday that Guided by Voices drummer Kevin Fennell had started an eBay auction on the band’s original drum kit, a relic that has toured with the indie rock band for almost its entire tenure. It looks like Fennell’s move didn’t sit well with the other members of the band, who issued an official statement on the Guided by VoicesFacebook page last night.
“For the record, the band Guided By Voices has nothing to do with the sale of Kevin Fennell’s drums. He is acting on his own and is no longer in the band,” the statement reads. The shakeup is another asterisk to add to the band’s complicated lineup, which has been shaky since the band’s inception. Prolific frontman Robert Pollard fired the band following 1996’s Under the Bushes Under the Stars to pursue arena rock ambitions, starting the band from scratch with a revolving door of Cleveland rockers and studio collaborators. Guided by Voices broke up in 2004 but reunited with its original lineup, which included Fennell, back in 2010. They have since put out four albums with a fifth one on tap for next year.
There’s no word yet on who, if anybody, might replace Fennell on drums, or whether the sale of the kit was the exact reason for his departure. Pollard said in a recent interview with Magnet that the band “already got a little bit stagnant. To me it’s kind of run its course.”
