Apple published their very own year-end list today, detailing the company’s picks for best music, movies, apps, podcasts and more for 2013.
The winners for each “Best of” award were picked from a pool of the top-selling downloads from each category. The top winners in Music included Justin Timberlake for “Artist of the Year,” Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (The Heist) for “Album of the Year,” Lorde (“Royals”) for “Song of the Year,” and Kendrick Lamar for “Breakthrough Artist.” Justin Timberlake topped the list for album sales, with Beyoncé in second just four days after the release of her album. Beyoncé’s record sales numbers reflect the singer’s decision to debut her album exclusively through iTunes.
Gravity grabbed the award for “Best Movie” in the film category. Despicable Me 2 received “Best Animated Movie,” while Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years A Slave) and Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine) were awarded Best Performance awards. The top downloaded movies of 2013 on iTunes included Daniel Craig’s Bond sequel Skyfall at No. 1, with Wreck it Ralph and Argo following.
“App of the Year” went to “Duolingo” – a free language learning app – and “Ridiculous Fishing” received the honor of “Game of the Year.” 2013’s most downloaded Paid Apps were “Minecraft – Pocket Edition” in first, “Heads Up,” and “Temple Run: Oz.” The most downloaded free apps included “Candy Crush Saga,” “YouTube” and “Temple Run 2.”
