While the next X-Men movie (Days of Future Past), won’t be released until May 2014, director Bryan Singer announced yesterday that he is already working on the next one.

Singer, who also directed the first two X-Men films, took to Twitter to announce that the next film in the series X-Men: Apocalypse, will arrive in 2016.

Fox later confirmed the news and added that the film is currently scheduled to be released Memorial Day weekend in 2016, the same day as the Alice in Wonderland sequel, according to Variety.

No further details have been provided other than the name and release date. As Slashfilm points out, the film could be based on the ancient, immortal villain Apocalypse), whose storyline also contains alternate universes and time travel (a central theme in the upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past). Apocalypse also makes appearances in future stories featuring the original X-Men, including Cyclops and Jean Grey, opening up the possibility for a return of James Marsden (Cyclops) and Famke Janssen (Jean Grey) to the series.
