The BBC premiered a Christmas webisode of its acclaimed detective series Sherlock on its iPlayer Tuesday, giving fans a seven-minute teaser ahead of the season three debut on Jan. 1. In last season’s finale, “The Reichenbach Fall,” Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) faked his own death in order to rid the world of his nemesis Moriarty, but now there are signs that he’s alive. Anderson, the forensic specialist who clashed with Sherlock in past seasons, believes he has turned up all over the world solving crimes in the shadows while he makes his way back to England, and his obsession with the missing genius has cost him his job. Watson (Martin Freeman), too, seems discontent, showing mild anger and the remnants of a deep grief as he watches an old birthday tribute video Sherlock made in lieu of attending his party. Meanwhile, Detective Inspector Lestrade maintains a healthy sense of doubt while privately noticing signs that the return of the missing sleuth may be imminent.
You can watch the webisode, titled “Many Happy Returns,” here:
Season three will air in the U.S. on PBS, on three consecutive Sunday nights beginning Jan. 19.
