North Carolina is renowned for its craft beer scene, thanks to the astonishing growth in craft breweries during the last few years, but small scale distilleries are on the rise too, due in part to recent North Carolina distillery law changes. Raleigh, the capitol of North Carolina and one of the state’s hottest beer cities, will be gaining its first rum distillery hopefully by the end of 2014.
Today, Raleigh Rum Company, started a Kickstarter campaign with an initial goal of raising $14,781 in the next 28 days. The company was founded by North Carolina natives, Chris Mendler, John Benefiel and Matt Grossman. Chris brings distilling and home brewing experience to the business, while John has a knowledge of manufacturing and Matt has a background in business.
Raleigh Rum Company plans to produce two kinds of spirits: Southern Silver White Rum and Deep South Spiced Rum. With the help of the Kickstarter, Raleigh Rum Company would like to hand craft their rum in either 26 or 50 gallon stills, attain all the necessary business and distilling permits and purchase bourbon barrels for aging. Backers will receive sweet rewards, ranging from t-shirts and Raleigh Rum Company glasses to ad spots on the company’s website.
