With hindsight it’s difficult to believe Tom Hiddleston, who plays the dark, impish Loki in Marvel’s Thor, The Avengers and Thor: The Dark World, originally auditioned to be the brawny, fair-haired god of thunder portrayed by Chris Hemsworth. A few brief clips from Hiddleston’s audition tape were released earlier this week, demonstrating the svelte English actor wearing a blonde wig and swinging the Asgardian hammer into the air. But as Thor executive producer Craig Kyle expressed, “From the moment [Hiddleston] came in and read, he was Loki.”
Hiddleston is not planning on returning for Marvel’s upcoming sequel The Avengers: Age of Ultron, which is set to release May 1, 2015. Marvel Studios announced earlier this week that Kyle will be returning to write the screenplay for the third installment of Thor with co-writer Christopher Yost. No release date or sequel title has been set at this time.
