Obama Bets White House Home Brew On US Hockey, And Loses

The leaders of North America threw down wagers over Olympic hockey this week, according to Beer Street Journal. Stephen Harper, the Canadian Prime Minister tweeted to President Obama, betting a case of beer per hockey game during the upcoming Olympic showdown on ice. Obama responded strongly and confidently, putting the White House’s own homebrew on the line.

Here’s the tweet string:

“I’m betting @barackobama one case of Canadian beer per hockey game this week. #teamusa is good, but #WeAreWinter. #GoCanadaGo @WhiteHouse”—Stephen Harper (@pmharper) on February 20, 2014

“@pmharper and I bet on the women’s and men’s US-Canada hockey games. Winner gets a case of beer for each game. #GoTeamUSA!”—The White House (@WhiteHouse) on February 20, 2014

Three things strike me as being odd about this wager. 1) That the leaders of the free world use twitter to call each other out, just like you and me. 2) The White House has a home brew? Why hasn’t Paste been offered a sample to review? 3) If the U.S. wins, Obama gets saddled with a bunch of Canadian beer. I mean, is there a winner in that scenario?

Kidding, Canada has some lovely beers. Look for a roundup of great Canadian beers on Paste soon. And it looks like Obama will be drinking a bunch of that sweet, sweet Canadian beer, as both the U.S. women and men lost to Canada in the semifinals. Bummer. But when beer changes hands, everybody’s a winner, right?
