It was announced in November that British comedian John Oliver would be leaving The Daily Show to host a new comedy talk show on HBO, and now we have the first significant details. For one, the show will be called Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, which immediately reminded me of a classic Mr. Show sketch. For two, it will premiere on April 27 at 11 p.m.
Former Daily Show lead writer Tim Carvell moved with Oliver, whose excellent work filling in for Jon Stewart last summer secured the deal. The show will be weekly, rather than daily, and it will air on Sundays to avoid an awkward conflict with The Daily Show.
Oliver is the latest Daily Show correspondent to move on to a bigger stage, and if he has as much success as Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert and Rob Corddry, we might have to call Jon Stewart Hollywood’s preeminent kingmaker.
(Note: An earlier version of this article misstated the day of the week the show will air.)
