It seems King James is expanding his rule to scripted television.
Starz has officially ordered six episodes of NBA superstar Lebron James’ scripted comedy Survivor’s Remorse, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The show is likewise set to be produced by James, longtime friend Maverick Carter, manager Paul Wachte and producer and Boston Red Sox chairman Tom Werner (The Cosby Show, Roseanne). Mike O’Malley (Glee, Shameless) will serve as writer and executive producer.
Announced last September, Survivor’s Remorse reportedly follows 20-something basketball phenom Cam Calloway after he signs a multi-million dollar contract with an Atlanta NBA team (that is not the Hawks) and is thrust, along with his cousin and confidant Reggie Vaughn, into the limelight.
In developing the show, James wanted to focus on how newly christened professional athletes deal with personal relationships and their communities in the wake of their success. “When you make it out [of the inner city], everyone expects—they automatically think that they made it out and it’s very tough for a young, African American 18-year-old kid to now hold the responsibility of a whole city, of a whole community,” James told ESPN, “I can relate to that as well.”
This won’t be the first time James has worked as a producer, as the best player in basketball produced the 2009 documentary More Than a Game, in which he also starred. Survivor’s Remorse is set to debut on Starz this fall.
