In case you’re wondering why there was no new True Detective last night, it’s because it would have been going head to head with what should have been the dramatic conclusion of Super Bowl 48 (or XLVIII for all the Romans out there). Unfortunately, the Super Bowl contained no on-field drama, as the Seahawks routed the Fightin’ Mannings 43-8, leaving a nation of jacked-up #sports fans confused as to where to channel their #sports energy…and, as mentioned, there was no True Detective so the dark swirling vortex of Matthew McConaughey’s tortured eyes were out of the question.
But Twitter was there, of course, arms wide open and ready to accept all varieties of Peyton Manning jokes and/or complaints of boredom…and then more Peyton Manning jokes. According to Twitter, Internet users tweeted about the Super Bowl more than 24.9 million times during the telecast, including over 2.2 million times as Bruno Mars and his band were rocking in Goldfinger-approved jackets during the halftime show. That’s a lot of tweeting! It was overwhelming at times, but as the game turned more and more underwhelming, more and more people logged on to share in the world’s collective frustration. At least we got a really, really weird Bob Dylan commercial out of it.
We’ve featured the best 30 of the 24.9 million tweets tweeted during the Super Bowl, arranged in chronological order, more or less, for your convenience. As always, this collection of Super Bowl Twitter greatness is finite and indisputable.
