John Singleton, director of classics like Boyz n the Hood and mainstream works like 2 Fast 2 Furious, has signed on to direct the forthcoming (untitled) Tupac biopic. It’s not a huge surprise, considering the two worked together on Singleton’s 1993 film Poetic Justice. The film will track the rapper’s rise to international fame and culminate with his murder in 1996.
“Tupac was the guy who I planned to do a lifetime of films with,” Singleton said. “His passing deeply affected my life as well as countless people in this world. His life story is as important to my generation.”
Singleton was rumored to have secured the job two years ago, but the deal fell through at the time. He will have all rights to Shakur’s music, and the next big step is finding the actor who will play the rap icon. Filming is scheduled to begin this spring.
