Back before Portland was the epicenter of craft beer, before there was even the notion of America having an epicenter of craft beer, Kurt and Rob Widmer were brewing delicious craft beer. Trend setters, pioneers, trail blazers…Widmer Brothers deserve all these titles and then some. This year, the Portland, Oregon brewery is celebrating its 30th anniversary.
The Widmer brothers started a commercial brewery just five years after home brewing was made legal in Oregon, serving their first German altbier in 1984. After all these years of craft beer advancement and experimentation, Widmer Brothers is still synonymous with its Hefe.
Starting in April, WB will celebrate their 30 years of brewing by brewing 30 small batch beers, each designed to commemorate a specific year and beer in the brewery’s 30-year history. According to the brewery, the Brothers are partnering with 30 different local artists to design the label art for the 30 Beers for 30 Years Project.
As beer geeks tend to say, “prost.”
Check out this happy birthday video where pretty much everybody in the craft brewing world wishes the Widmers a happy 30th.
