Brevity really is the soul of wit, at least where Lisa Brown’s book reviews are concerned. Eschewing boring text for comic strips, Brown requires only three panels to summarize and critique well-known titles. We collected some of our favorites from Brown’s Three Panel Book Review tumblr for the gallery above.
Brown, an illustrator, author and cartoonist, told Paste that she began creating the reviews in 2008: “Oscar Villalon, who was at that time the Book Review section editor at the San Francisco Chronicle, hired me to do something visual and funny for the section.” Her reviews were a hit, and she continued to draw them on and off until last summer.
Brown’s review of The Yellow Wallpaper (one of her favorites) graces the cover of her limited edition book of reviews published for this year’s California Bookstore Day. You can view more of Brown’s work here.
