The more iconic works of famous street artist Banksy have been recreated with LEGO bricks in the playful photography series “Bricksy: LEGO Banksy.” Canadian photographer Jeff Friesen was inspired to photograph toy scenes while babysitting his daughter, and his project took off from there. “Every summer I look after my elementary school-aged daughter in the afternoons. She doesn’t care for too much serious stuff so we do fun things instead, such as playing with toys,” Friesen says on his website.
“Bricksy: LEGO Banksy” features a number of the street artist’s more famous ephemeral works of art, like “Girl With a Balloon” and “Like a Rat On a Wire.” The combination of Banksy and LEGO feels strangely natural, given the mysterious street artist’s penchant for using pop culture symbols and children in his politically-charged works.
Bricksy is part of a larger project Friesen co-collaborates on with his daughter and her LEGO bricks called “The Brick Fantastic,” which also includes a series of scenes from all 50 states. You can view all of Friesen’s Bricksy creations on his website for the series.
