“I’ll buy you a drink if you tell me some lies,” is not exactly the message people expect to see when it comes to the pretty, lettered quotes taking over Instagram. It is the message of New York-based art director and content creator Timothy Goodman, though.
The acclaimed designer behind stylish companies including Airbnb and MoMA, Goodman’s newest project “Insta-therapy” features a refreshing series of handwritten Instagram posts. But you won’t find inspirational messages such as “Do What Makes You Come Alive” or “Keep Calm” here. Written in an imperfect type he originally designed for Ace Hotel, his self-generated quotes and stories explore past relationship experiences, fears and memories. And without, well, fear.
The bold project comes as a continuation of Goodman’s prolific project “40 Days of Dating,” in which he teamed up with his good friend Jessica Walsh to date for 40 days in an effort to explore their different relationship problems and hangups.
In an interview with Design Envy, he described “Insta-therapy” as, “a fun way to keep communicating with an audience through my own voice.”
“It’s probably a response to a wall I’m no longer interested in having up as a creative person,” he said. “There are no rules. I’m interested in sharing my opinions because you find that our stories are all very similar.”
And they are. Goodman’s angsty messages are almost instantly relatable, and, most of all, honest. Check out a few of our favorites in the gallery above, and check out the rest of Goodman’s work here.
