Take your taste buds on a barbecue-fueled road trip with The Great NC BBQ Map! Charlotte residents Amanda Fisher and Paul Bright recently released the first, and only, comprehensive guide to 434 barbecue restaurants in North Carolina. In addition, the map describes the history of barbecue in America and lists 42 BBQ festivals.
Amanda and Paul worked on the map for over a year, perfecting the design and interviewing every restaurant. For each restaurant, different symbols indicate which part of the pig is used, the cooking method, and the style of sauce. “For some of these places,” Fisher tells us, “It’s otherwise impossible to find accurate information, or in some cases, any at all. We wanted to take the guess work out of finding barbeque.” You won’t find a ranking system or restaurant reviews; “Everyone has different tastes. We want people to try the barbecue and decide for themselves what they like,” says Fisher.
The Great NC BBQ Map was conceptualized, designed and printed all in North Carolina. It began as a 30-day Kickstarter campaign and was funded by 336 people across the country. “We really wanted to bring together a group of North Carolina minds for this project to give the map a great southern feel,” Fisher says. “Everyone who worked on this project is completely obsessed with barbecue.”
And we’re obsessed with this map! Grab yourself one on their website. Check out these 12 NC bands we featured in the 50 States Project for some road trip tunes. If you live in North Carolina, the map is also available in restaurants and shops across the state.
