While the end of relationships are never easy, breaking up by text message has to be one of the most heartless ways. It’s an unfortunate result of modern technology. Instead of talking face-to-face we now spend most of our time communicating in the digital world whether that’s through texts, snapchats or emails. While this has made communicating easier (and maybe a little more fun, who doesn’t love emojis?) it also has made it less personal.
Artist Allison Wade explores this concept in her series, Break-Up Texts. The series is a collection of paintings of texts that ended her own relationships whether the text was sent by or to her. Wade says, “The texts featured in [my] work are an exposition of one-way communication and social distance. It is easier in our postmodern world to leave a voicemail and now a text message than talk face-to-face to other people. These new tools in communication put the sender even further away from the recipient.”
The paintings bring the the text messages into the physical world and gives them a permanence that being on a phone can’t. Some are bizarre, some are funny and some are just sad. Check out all of the heartbreak in the gallery above and tell us what you think in the comments below.
