On Tuesday, Colombia defeated Canada 2-1 in an international friendly that was overshadowed by off-field circumstances. Only 24 hours before kickoff, the mother of Colombia coach Jose Pekerman passed away, and it was speculated that the manager would fly home early to be with his family. Instead, the 65-year-old Argentine stayed to see his side grab a late winner courtesy of a lovely effort from Real Madrid attacker James Rodriguez. Then came the resulting celebrations.
For those of us who were already enamored of Colombia after their strong showing at the 2014 World Cup, this only adds further evidence that the CONMENBOL side remains the darling of international soccer (even if one of its players occasionally breaks a superstar’s back).
