Every designer is familiar with the tug-of-war between computer-assisted clarity and the messy, but effective nature of handcrafting. French artist Bruno of BMD Design has abandoned that battle entirely, nestling himself in wet brushstrokes and uneven lines. Bruno’s work has clear inspiration in the advertising of 150 years ago, but his hand-painted technique evokes a feeling even older than that. It’s almost akin to an illuminated manuscript, if those medieval texts concerned themselves with skulls, motorcycles and beer labels.
BMD Design clearly delights in juxtaposition of uneven saturations of ink next to painstaking, precise details. Part of the joy of his Instagram account is his close-ups of works-in-progress. These behind-the-scenes peeks show the lengths Bruno goes to achieve his relentlessly tactile style.
