The Roles of a Lifetime: Johnny Depp

As a reluctant teen idol thanks to TV’s 21 Jump Street, Johnny Depp faced the credibility problem that typically hobbles the careers of ridiculously beautiful young actresses. That problem was permanently resolved by a long string of edgy, critically acclaimed film roles—beginning with his first, in John Waters’ sleeper hit Cry-Baby, followed by Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood and Donnie Brasco, to name a few. (See them all in our photo gallery, with the exception of his latest role, the so-enigmatic-we-can’t-find-a-decent-image Guy Lapointe in Tusk.) Now, when it comes to choosing projects, Depp is the honey badger: he takes what he wants. Sometimes he hits it big (the inaugural Pirates of the Caribbean was a critical and commercial success); often (especially recently) he doesn’t. And like the honey badger, he don’t give a shit.
