You know Dominic Monaghan as Charlie from Lost or Merry from Lord of the Rings. But he’s also a Paste Soccer columnist and a lifelong Manchester United fan.

Let’s be honest: Manchester United are a very famous football team. An empire. A football team whose shirt can behaves as currency in foreign countries, and an icebreaker. They are a buzzword in football.

They are also in a sorrier state than I have seen in a long time.

Injury ridden. Low on confidence. Players forced to play out of position. Out of the Champions League and battling for fourth spot? This is Manchester United? After 20 years fighting to WIN the premier league and Champions League? I dread to think what stunning display our darling Cristiano Ronaldo could put on against us at the moment.

So why am I about to argue in favor of keeping faith with Louis van Gaal? Here’s why:

We are building a new team and it takes time. New signings need stability to bed in and start playing as a team and the last thing they need is constant rejigging and changing from yet another new manager.

Louis van Gaal is a world class manager with the clout and the track record to handle the job and the players at Manchester United. If he says he needs three years to be back where United belong I say we give it to him. How long did it take Sir Alex Ferguson to really start winning things regularly at Manchester United? Many many seasons.

The Manchester United fans I know are realistic and patient about where we are at. They are willing to give LvG good chance to get better. Also, it’s exciting to be a Manchester United fan right now!

Let the media and the plastic fans demand immediate results.

Rome wasn’t built in a day.

And if the new Roman Empire is given enough time to rebuild it will reign for a long time to come.
