Just about every major tech company out there has a smartwatch these days. You’ll find the Apple Watch, the Microsoft Band, Android Wear, and even the Fitbit Surge. However, none of these companies have attempted to do what the a startup company called Kairos Watches is trying to do.
All Kairos Watches mechanical watches come up with traditional wind-up components like you’d see in any watch. The twist is that these watches are also smartwatches. That’s right—you’ll get notifications, see weather updates, get emails, track fitness, and all the other things that most smartwatches do. That means long after the battery dies, you’ll still be able to tell time and won’t have a completely useless device wrapped around your wrist. Considering battery life is such a huge issue with smartwatches, the fact that Kairos is just a normal watch underneath it all makes it incredibly appealing.
The look of these watches are definitely more on the casual, sporty side of things unlike most of the faux-luxury look of most Android Wear or Apple Watch devices. It seems like quite an ambitious project for a startup to pull off, but preorders for the different models can be made right now.
We won’t know for sure if these Kairos Watches will succeed in the long run, but this just might be a serious option in the future for watch makers and tech companies alike.
