Steve Earle has shared “You’re the Best Lover That I’ve Ever Had,” a song from his upcoming album, Terraplane, due for release on February 17.

Terraplane, Earle’s 16th solo album, is being recorded in Nashville and is steeped in a blues sensibility, according to Rolling Stone. Earle explains that he was drawn to the blues, in part, as a reaction to his 2012 separation from his then-wife Allison Moorer. “Everything that happens to me will find its way into my lyrics, which can be an advantage as a writer and a disadvantage as a person,” he says. “I’m not trying to be mean. But I’m not gonna not write about what’s happening, so there’s a lot of sad stuff here. It was a good time to make a blues record.”

Another impetus toward the blues was simply his current band’s unusual proficiency with the form. “This is the best band I’ve ever had and that’s part of the reason for me wanting to make a blues record,” Earle says. “Chris Masterson cut his teeth on this stuff in Texas. He started out playing blues guitar, almost exclusively. He’s really good at it.”

Earle is planning to tour in the spring of 2015, following the release of Terraplane. Listen to “You’re the Best Lover That I’ve Ever Had” below.
