The design duo, Florent Biais (architect) and Aubrey Richardson (entrepreneur), have teamed up to design a comically gigantic hat that has been named “Le Grand Hat.” Their newly designed hat most definitely one-ups Pharrell’s “Smokey the Bear” inspired hat (designed by Vivienne Westwood) that he paraded down the Grammy’s Red Carpet back in January 2014. Pharrell’s hat became an internet sensation then went onto display at the Newseum Museum in D.C., so perhaps Biais and Richardson are onto something?
They took the classic formal top hat and the traditional baseball hat and morphed them into Le Grand, a mixture of formal wear and street wear. The hat is 100% cotton twill, adjustable, and will make you an entire foot taller. Let’s put it this way, you can pull an overweight rabbit out of it. But buyer beware! If the hat is adjusted to too large of a setting, the hat will fall, completely covering your entire head. Doesn’t this sound like the most ridiculous, over the top thing ever invented? The designers have hopes that one will be able to wear Le Grand with a tuxedo, potentially becoming a couture accessory and a new fashion icon.
The hat’s logo (an upside down triangle) is adorned at the very top of the hat, allegedly designed stylistically with the influence of the Egyptian Cobra.
People seem to be digging the idea, as the funding is already over the two’s $3,500 goal, with final pledges being accepted for 12 more days, coming to an end December 21st. If you have to get your hands on one of these, you can reserve your own hat once you pledge $38.
