While readers wait for The Book of Dust, Philip Pullman’s long-awaited follow up to his massively popular His Dark Materials trilogy, they can get their fantasy fix with a new short story called “The Collectors.”
In a short story that’s set in Pullman’s alternate version of Oxford, readers get a glimpse into the early years of Mrs. Coulter, a character from the Dark Materials books that fans will remember for being someone of “pure, poisonous toxic malice.” Pullman wrote the story exclusively for the digital audiobook provider Audible, which released a narrated excerpt version by acclaimed actor Bill Nighy. It’s the first time Pullman has returned to Lyra Belacqua’s universe, and Nighy gives it a perfect touch. Listen to an excerpt of “The Collectors” in the player below.
Also, more Dark Materials books are well on their way. Pullman promised that he’s “aiming to finish this next year. Then it’s a fairly lengthy process of editing. But I’m well on my way and proceeding steadily.”
In the U.S., “The Collectors” will be out via Audible on Jan. 12.
