It turns out that Joan Rivers, Jeff Goldblum, a Star Map and nipples have something in common. What is it? They are all pieces from downtown Los Angeles-based Clashist’s new resort capsule, available online. Creative director and founder Heather Lipner says the newbie brand (launched in late 2013) has been “aggressively getting up to speed releasing according to the fashion industry’s schedule.”
“As far as this mini collection, we mapped out color to align the look and overall feel, and with all collections, we’re attempting to design conversation pieces,” says Lipner.
As it is a new year, it might be time to finally trade in that well-worn James Franco or Ryan Gosling for a let’s say, sophisticate route, of sexy Jeff Goldblum. The Sexy Jeff Tee is reminiscent of the Tim and Eric video in which Goldblum clearly “brings sexy back.” Another piece in the collection is an illustrated Star Map Tee, mapping out in LA where Brangelina and their brood Leonardo DiCaprio (ironically not looking like himself), Dr. Dre’s headphones and a Mariah Carey rainbow can be found.
Clashist’s most popular design to-date is the Lena Dunham tee. “There’s a lot to understand and say about how and why she’s interesting—as she’s influenced how we perceive ourselves,” says Lipner.
In line with the Dunham tee, and part of the capsule, is the Tit Tee, with the social media campaign of #freethenipple; encouraging women everywhere to wear their tits on their sleeve. Lipner says the concept for this tee involves questions including, “how does it make you feel when wearing the tee?” and “how does it feel when you see the tee?”
Another illustrated design in “very limited edition” is the Joan Gives the Bird Tee, which conveys the spirit of Joan Rivers by depicting her “flipping the bird” at various moments in her life. The brand will also give 10% of profits to the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) for sales of this design, as Rivers was a donor. Lipner notes that, “we designed this tee before she passed and felt strongly we still wanted to release it.” This one does come as a bittersweet tribute to Joan, in knowing she would have gladly snapped a ‘gram of herself wearing it, any day of the week.
