The Fault In Our Stars Author John Green Talks about the Pitfalls of Loving Liverpool FC While Sponsoring AFC Wimbledon

The New York Times bestselling author John Green garnered a lot of attention last year when his popular book The Fault In Our Stars was made into a hit summer movie. He’s also half of the very popular YouTube duo Vlogbrothers and a host/producer of several educational video series. Over the better part of a decade he’s built something of a media empire around himself and his brother Hank, fueled by a growing and vibrant online community of Nerdfighters.

For the past year or so, Green has been a sponsor of AFC Wimbledon, the fan-owned club in League Two that was born from the ashes of Wimbledon FC. The sponsorship deal features advertisements with Nerdfighter logos at the club’s ground in South London and on the back of the players’ shorts. Green and his fans have become a new and vocal addition to Wimbledon’s growing fanbase.

Green is also a fan of Liverpool, and has been an avid supporter for his entire adult life. The conflicting allegiances haven’t posed much of a problem so far as the two clubs are separated by three whole divisions.

On Monday, that all changes. AFC Wimbledon host Liverpool in the Third Round of the FA Cup, in a rematch (in spirit, at least) of the historic 1988 Final that saw Wimbledon’s “Crazy Gang” notch a stunning upset over the Reds to lift the cup in what remains the proudest moment in their history.

As the Dons prepare to make history once again, Green talks about his divided loyalties in the latest installment of Vlogbrothers, recorded hours before catching a flight to London in order to see both of his beloved clubs duke it out in person.
