It’s hard to imagine that Julianne Moore won’t be in the running for a Best Actress Oscar when the nominations for the 87th Annual Academy Awards are announced this week. Even the handful of critics who didn’t like Still Alice praised Moore’s masterful portrayal of a college professor battling early-onset Alzheimer’s. Challenged with carrying a potentially schmaltzy movie in which the main action was inside her character’s head, she did it with an understated complexity that few actors could have managed. Maybe the fifth time will prove a charm for Moore, who has received four Oscar nominations since her film debut in 1990—and who landed a Golden Globe Sunday night for Best Actress, Drama (where she was also nominated for Best Actress, Comedy or Musical, for Maps to the Stars).
