NBC is throwing a massive anniversary-party-slash-reunion-special this Sunday to celebrate 40 years of raising havoc every Saturday night.
The now three-and-a-half-hour special begins at 8 p.m. EST and will feature a bevy of celebrities, including former cast members and musical guests. Live sketches from former cast members like Chris Rock, Will Ferrell, Bill Murray and Eddie Murphy are sure to invoke memories of four decades worth of SNL. The show will also feature clips and musical performances from Paul Simon and Paul McCartney and a Jimmy Fallon/Justin Timberlake comedy homage. It’s enough to get anyone feeling nostalgic
So many stars have wanted to be a part of this milestone event that NBC had to add an additional half-hour to the originally scheduled three hour event. In the past few days, Billy Crystal, Bradley Cooper, Edward Norton, Miley Cyrus, Louis C.K., Kevin Nealon, Ana Gasteyer, Colin Quinn, Joe Piscopo, Tim Meadows and Will Forte have all been added to the show’s lineup.
Show-runner Lorne Michaels has been on board for all but five of SNL’s 40 years. He says that he invited every host and nearly every cast member from previous seasons to reunite for the anniversary special.
Aside from the late John Belushi and Gilda Radner, all of the show’s original Not Ready for Prime Time Players will be back. Footage of improvised testing shot earlier in 1975 will be aired, featuring Belushi, Radner, and Dan Aykroyd.
“We’re doing the most we’ve ever done on an anniversary show,” Michaels says. In addition to the anniversary show, there will be a Red-Carpet Special beginning at 7 p.m. EST.
